Friends and followers we have a confession to make on this Tuesday Tidbits. We are done. No, no, no…we aren’t actually done with the house. We are simply done mentally. We are done physically. We are over it. We have somehow allowed ourselves to fall into the scam of social media. While scrolling through Instagram this weekend, I actually said the following words: “everyone else is enjoying fall activities while we are working.” It’s possible I even whined a little while saying it. Clearly, it was time to put down the phone/tablet/laptop. After a few minutes of self-pity discussion, Trent and I both remembered the 99% rule. We learned this rule (okay…we sort of made it up) over a decade ago when we fully gutted and remodeled our first home. I’ve told this rule to clients that plan to do a major renovation and I believe it is true with almost everyone. It’s simple:

When you are in a major home renovation project and you have hit your limit of what you can handle, you are at the 99% point. You have 1% left to go. That’s it! The 1% may feel more difficult and more expensive than the entire 99%…but it’s not. You are almost done, so you absolutely have no choice but to keep going.

We are there right now. We are SO close that we can both taste it! We just have to keep repeating that we only have 1% left to do.

So, here is our 1% of the last 1% that we accomplished this week:

We have been (very slowly) piecing back together the original trim, doors and windows on the main floor. I intentionally took a couple of pics with Trent working so that you can fully grasp just how large this stuff is.

All of this means more caulk and another layer of paint…but it’s close. So very close.

I said that I was done with the trim, which was totally true. But then we had to buy trim pieces to go around every window and door since the drywall is so much thinner than the multiple layers of plaster. So, I’m back to painting trim.

By next week’s Tuesday Tidbits, we will have carpet in the master bedroom and the upstairs guest suite. In theory, if all goes exactly as planned (big “if”) the upstairs should be completely done within the next week or two. Which means I can start shopping for some new furniture to go in those rooms!

And finally, we have the master shower glass wall in! We aren’t planning on doing an actual door on the shower because of how large it is. We think the water won’t splatter beyond the glass. However, in case we are wrong we made it possible to add a door later on.

Once again, thank you for following along (and listening to our small confession). Have a wonderful week!

There are so many people in life who only have 1% more to go but they don’t realize it and never move on. Thank you for sharing your 99% goal.

You both are such amazing people to take on a project like this! I love everything you have done and applaud your skill and determination to complete such a task. I can visualize the furniture and see the Christmas tree all lit up with both of you sitting with a glass of wine enjoying the fruits of your labor. It won’t be long………
